“Our hope is to find an Indigenous student well versed in his or her culture, history and current issues, and keen to share that knowledge and life experience with 200 students from around 80 nationalities at a UWC,” said UWC Australia’s selections coordinator Michael Janda.

The successful indigenous applicant will spend the two years living and studying at UWC SEA in Singapore

Award-winning young Australian playwright and law student Nakkiah Lui was the first Indigenous Australian to attend UWC Pearson College, and she says the experience helped facilitate her success in winning the Australia Council’s Dreaming Award and having her play This Heaven run for an extended season at Sydney’s Belvoir theatre.

“Attending a United World College has been one of the most amazing experiences in my life and continues to be - there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about it,” she said.

“I feel empowered and know that I am a step closer to making our world a better place.”

Any student applying for the place at UWC SEA will also be considered for all other scholarships and places.

UWCs are a group of not-for-profit international schools that give young people from dozens of nationalities the opportunity to come together and share their cultural and personal experiences, while studying the International Baccalaureate for two years. The aim of the schools is to make education a force for peace and sustainability by fostering understanding and cooperation among tomorrow’s citizens and leaders.
