Introduction

UWC Robert Bosch College is one of two new colleges set to open in 2014 and will be the first UWC in Germany. Based in Freiburg in the South-west of the country, the college is located in an important university and ‘green’ city but is also adjacent to the beautiful and historic Black Forest.

History

Robert Bosch, the College’s eponymous inspiration, was a 20th Century German entrepreneur and philanthropist. In 1886 he established the Workshop for Precision and Electrical Engineering that developed into an internationally-operating company. Like Kurt Hahn, the founder of UWC, Robert Bosch believed that a peaceful future could be built through cooperation and inter-cultural understanding. Planning for the college began at the time of the 150th anniversary of Robert Bosch’s birthday and was set in motion by the Deutsche Stiftung UWC and the Robert Bosch Stiftung.

Campus and facilities

The College is based on the site of a former Carthusian monastery which traces its roots as far back as the 14th Century. The monastery had close teaching links with the University of Freiburg which gives the site a unique educational heritage. The campus, including the historic charterhouse building, has been sympathetically restored and re-developed into a state-of-the-art educational facility, thanks to a 40 million Euro donation from The Robert Bosch Stiftung and Robert Bosch GmbH.

Beyond the classroom

In keeping with the ethos and legacy of Robert Bosch and of the Bosch Foundation itself, the school will place emphasis on environmental issues and in particular on how technology can contribute to sustainability, ecological development and peace. Freiburg is an environmentally-aware city with Green City status and, as a partner, will help the College to further its sustainability goals.

When it opens its doors in 2014 UWC Robert Bosch College will welcome 100 students in total, and, at full capacity, will have 100 students in each year group of the IB. Each year 25 places will be awarded to Germans and 75 places to students from other nations. Through the generosity of the College’s partners, every student will receive a scholarship to meet all demonstrated need.
